Drynaria rigidula Basket Fern Oakleaf Fern

This distinct and rare fern is as fascinating as it is beautiful. Prized for its unique fronds of which there are two distinct shapes. Long green ferny fronds  (fertile fronds). And shorter leathery almost oak leaved fronds (sterile fronds) that give it the striking appearance basket shaped appearance. That has lead to its common names of Oakleaf fern and Basket fern. This epiphytic fern is native to Southeast Asia and Australia. Our form offered for sale is the Australain form of the species. Here it grows on trees and rocks in rainforest conditions from NSW to northern Queensland. The first few images in this listing are an example of what the plant grows into. And are provided for reference. Our plants are devisions growing strongly and will take a while to produce the Oakleaf shaped fern leaves. Over time they will wrap and encase the plastic hanging basket.

Care Instructions:

Light: Drynaria rigidula thrives in bright, indirect light. They can tolerate some direct morning sunlight but should be protected from intense midday sun, which can cause leaf burn.

Water: This fern prefers to be kept consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly, allowing the soil or medium to dry slightly between waterings. It’s important to provide good drainage to prevent root rot.

Humidity: Drynaria enjoy high humidity, ideally between 60-80%. Regular misting wI’ll help maintain the necessary moisture levels, especially in drier climates. Our plants are grown outdoors in Sydney with no additional misting other than a regular water.

Temperature: in an ideal situation these ferns thrive in warm temperatures, ideally between 10-30°C). Our plants are growing outdoors and tolerating our much cooler winters and much hotter summers than this recommended temperature range.

Soil: Drynaria prefers a well-draining medium. A mix of orchid bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite works well. Alternatively, it can be mounted on a piece of wood or bark, provided it receives regular watering and humidity.

Fertiliser: We feed our plants regularly through spring and summer with a rock mineral based fertiliser Garden Delight.

Our plants available for sale are young divisions growing strongly. We currently have them available in 200mm hanging baskets. They have not yet produced the shorter Oakleaf fronds but will do so over time.
