Telopea Waratah Shady Lady White

The highly elusive and coveted Yellow Waratah.

The Waratah is one of Australia’s most iconic flowers. And the word Waratah comes from the indigenous Eora and Dharug languages and translates as 'Seen from afar' and you can see why with these magnificent blooms. They come in many different forms and colours. Its crimson flower heads have adorned more Australian paraphernalia than any other flower, from stamps, clothing, tea towels, paintings and belts. And it’s no different for gardeners. With every gardener who has an interest in our native plants wanting to grow this iconic plant.

Shady Lady Yellow is a local Yellow hybrid of the NSW Waratah. This elusive and much sought after Waratah hybrid is far more adaptable, and far tougher in our garden conditions than the wild species. Its stunning White flowers adorn a statuesque deep green shrub through spring. Making it a real statement in your spring garden.

Growing 3m H and 1.5m W if left un-pruned. They can be planted at the back of a border or in a native garden. They also do well in a large pot. And can be pruned to maintain a flowering shrub or 1-1.5m. Waratah love a semi-shade to full sun position and a well drained soil that is slightly acidic. They tolerate moderate frosts. And a regular water.

Waratah are sensitive to Phosphorous in fertiliser. For best results we recommend using Garden Delight Rock Minerals at planting and in place of a fertiliser.

We use Sulphur to acidify our garden soil or potting mix to suit growing Waratah. Should you need to do so with yours, you will find our Gardeners Sulphur here
