Withania somnifera ASHWAGANDHA Indian Ginseng
ASHWAGANDHA or Indian Ginseng is a low growing perennial plant reaching approx 90cm tom1m in height. Pale green flowers form into fruit which ripen orange red. Part of the nightshade family, it is also called poison gooseberry or winter cherry. The root of the plant and the berry are both used medicinally and in Ayurvedic medicine for a wide range uses. In India and North Africa, the plant holds the same degree of prestige as ginseng does in China. Native to India and Nepal. It is cultivated in many parts of India. But is very seldomly available in Australia.

Ashwagandha thrive in warm, sheltered positions in the garden. Loving full sun, but they will tolerate part sun. And love a moist but well drained soil. Water regularly through the summer months, reducing water in Autumn and winter. They will tolerate rich, or poor soils. They can be grow very successfully it pots or in the garden.
